The author calls into question an interpretation of the Roman de Tristran proposed by certain scholars : that it is a work with a conscious moral dimension. Three possibilities are considered : that the whole of medieval literary production (including so-called secular writing) is fundamentally Christian ; that only a part of this corpus is explicitly edifying, and Tristran belongs to this category ; that the most prudent course is to read this romance without pre-conceived ideas. An objective reading indicates that the words, acts, and feelings of the main characters do not support the idea that Béroul was guided by Christian ethics, or indeed any ethics. On the contrary, an outstanding feature of this tale is its amorality.

L'auteur met en question une interprétation du Roman de Tristran proposée par certains chercheurs, à savoir qu'il s'agirait d'une œuvre ayant une dimension morale consciemment voulue. Sont passées en revue trois possibilités : que toute la production littéraire du moyen âge (y compris l'écriture dite profane) soit fondamentalement chrétienne ; qu'une partie seulement de ce corpus soit explicitement édifiante, et que Tristran appartienne à cette catégorie ; que le plus prudent soit de lire ce roman sans parti pris. Il ressort d'une lecture objective que les paroles, les actes et les sentiments des héros n'appuient pas la notion que l'éthique chrétienne — voire l'éthique tout court — ait guidé le romancier. Bien au contraire, un trait saillant de ce récit, c'est l'amoralité.
