Elaborated on since the Antiquity, rediscovered and modified by the carolingian artists, the theme of calendars, while undergoing important changes, was highly successful during the 12th and 13th centuries, both in monumental art and in the illustration of manuscripts. If there is a common stock of images to be found running through the calendars, whatever the technique, certain motifs appear only in the monumental cycles, but a great many more being reserved for illuminations. The miniaturists' influence on artists charged with the decoration of churches contributed, particularly in the 13th century, to the enrichening of this iconographic motif.
