    Dans cet article, j'examine comment les Plantagenêt ont compris leur autorité politique, et comment ils l'ont adaptée aux réalités gouvernementales. Je n'étudie qu'une seule région, l'Aquitaine, et un seul événement, la succession de Richard Cœur-de-Lion par Jean sans Terre en 1199. Comment, à cette occasion, le droit héréditaire de la duchesse Aliénor s'est-il transféré à l'autorité du nouveau roi ? La solution a été formulée dans deux chartes de juillet 1199. Dans l'une, Aliénor transfère à Jean l'hommage de ses vassaux ; dans l'autre, Jean le lui rend, non pas en tant que suzeraine, mais en tant que domina. C'est là une solution féodale, avec toutes ses conséquences matérielles, puisque l'hommage crée un lien juridictionnel, et que la juridiction implique patronage et revenus. C'est de ce point de vue que j'examine les acta d'Aliénor, de Richard et d'Otto, comtes de Poitou.

    This article examines how the Plantagenet understood their political authority and how this was related to the realities of government. It is limited to a single region, Aquitaine, and to a single event, the succession of John Lackland to Richard Lionheart in 1199. How on that occasion, was the hereditary right of the duchess, Eleanor, related to the authority of the new king ? The solution was expressed in two charters of July 1199. In the one Eleanor transferred to John the homage of her vassals and in the other John restored it to Eleanor, not as suzerain but as domina. It was a feudal solution and one with material consequences, for homage created a jusrisdictional bond and jurisdiction brought with it both patronage and revenue. From this point of view the article examines the acta of Eleanor and Richard and Otto counts of Poitou.
