A group of wooden sculptures, mainly crucifixes from the decades around 1500 was investigated by the author at the OPD within the last few years. The construction technique of all the examined sculptures involves the carving of the figure from an assembled block. The research included direct surveying, graphic mapping, photography and X-ray in order to collect precise data on the construction techniques and relate them to the workshops of those artists who were particularly active in the production of wooden crucifixes. Here the examination of six sculptures, five crucifixes and one statue of Saint Sebastian by Giuliano da Sangallo, Antonio da Sangallo and Baccio da Montelupo is presented. Combining the observation of traces on the surface and the reading of X-ray made it possible to understand the different types of assembled block constructions. For the Sangallo crucifixes a plain assembled block technique was detected while in all the examined sculptures by Baccio da Montelupo an especially sophisticated technique was found: those are carved from an assembled block but also hollowed out.
