    The strength of the roots : the political culture of the italian social movement on the threshold of government. Piero Ignazi. The Italian Social Movement (MSI), the traditional representative of the Italian far right, which took the name of National Alliance (AN) for the 27 March 1994 parliamentary elections, recently achieved a major electoral and political breakthrough. Its electoral success and its participation in the Berlusconi government are due both to long term factors (the "historicity" of fascism and the end of political polarisation) and to contingent ones : the collapse of Christian democracy, the "clean hands" operation, Berlusconi's entry on the scene and the media effectiveness of the MSI's leader, Gianfranco Fini. Does the transformation of the MSI into the AN represent a real ideological upheaval ? The analysis of the MSI militants' political culture, based on survey data concerning mid-level cadres and party youth, reveals an ideology which, though nuanced, remains strongly anchored in the fascist tradition.

Le Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), traditionnel représentant de l'extrême droite italienne, qui a pris lors des élections législatives du 27 mars 1994 le nom de Alleanza Nazionale (AN), a récemment fait une percée électorale et politique significative. Son succès électoral et sa participation au gouvernement Berlusconi tiennent à des facteurs de longue durée (« historicité » du fascisme et fin de la polarisation politique) et à des facteurs contingents: effondrement de la Démocratie chrétienne, opération «mains propres», entrée en scène de Berlusconi, et efficacité médiatique du leader du MSI, Gianfranco Fini. Le projet de transformation du MSI en AN représente-t-il un véritable bouleversement idéologique? L'analyse de la culture politique des militants du MSI, à l'aide de données d'enquête sur les cadres intermédiaires et les jeunes du parti, révèle une idéologie qui, bien que nuancée, reste fortement ancrée dans la tradition fasciste.
