    Thomas Hobbes The natural condition of mankind A study of the Latin edition of Th. Hobbes's Leviathan (1668) leads to a new interpretation of the concept of state of nature. After underlining its rhetorical status — an attempt to found a doctrine of political obligation and of the rationality of obedience to civil law — the author deals with the issue of natural law. He shows the need to distinguish the concept of self-preservation and that of a right over all things, a distinction necessary for understanding the logic of Leviathan. Finally, a hypothesis concerning the reasons that make this state of nature a condition of terror and uncertainty for intolerable human beings refers to an epistemology of opacity, the point of departure of Hobbes's political theory.

    Une étude de l'édition latine du Léviathan de Thomas Hobbes (1668) permet d'avancer une nouvelle interprétation du concept d'état de nature. Après avoir souligné son statut rhétorique, visant à fonder une doctrine de l'obligation politique et de la rationalité de l'obéissance à la loi civile, l'auteur aborde la question du droit naturel. Il montre la né­cessité de distinguer le concept d'autopréservation de celui du droit sur toutes les choses, distinction nécessaire à la compréhension de la logique du Léviathan. Enfin, une hypo­thèse sur les raisons qui font de cet état de nature une condition de terreur et d'incerti­tude intenables pour les êtres humains renvoie à une épistémologie de l'opacité, point de départ de la théorie politique de Hobbes.
