Islamic sociabilite and political expression in Turkey the new Vakifs The vakif (from the Arab waqf, foundation) is one of the few Ottoman institutions which resisted the shocks of the Jacobine Kemalist revolution. After many years of lethargy, it was reformed starting in 1967 through legislation and became again a factor of mobilization and sociability used by all sec tors of society, including the Islamists. Whether Islamist " research " structures, organizations sheltering brotherhoods, religions groups or antichambers of political parties, the Islamists vakifs all have one basic common point : bottom-up re-Islamization. As they are already largely politicized, one may wonder if, given the social-democrats' and thé libérals' inability to propose a credible societal project, these organizations are not effective means of preparing the conquest of power.

Le vakif (du mot arabe waqf, fondation) est l'une des rares institutions ottomanes qui aient résisté aux secousses de la révolution kémaliste jacobine. Remanié à partir de 1967, après de longues années de léthargie, grâce à une législation, il redevient un facteur de mobilisation et de sociabilité, utilisé par tous les secteurs de la société y compris les islamistes. Qu'ils soient des structures de « recherches » islamistes, des organismes abritant des confréries, des courants religieux ou des antichambres des partis politiques, les vakifs islamistes ont tous un point commun fondamental : la réislamisation par le bas. Déjà largement politisés, on peut se demander si, face à l'incapacité des sociaux-démocrates et des libéraux à proposer un projet de société crédible, ces organismes ne sont pas les moyens efficaces pour préparer la conquête du pouvoir.
