  The modernity of Enlightenment and Romanticism deeply unsettled the centuries-old legacy of rhetoric, labelling it as an ancient teaching. Starting in the 19th century, rhetoric was therefore progressively replaced by historicism and philology. However, there were relevant exceptions to the widespread condemnation of rhetoric, notably in the articulations sought by Romantic poetics between rhetoric, poetry and philosophy. Gradually, the importance of “rhetoricity”in language and in literary language achieved increasing importance, with the poetics of Symbolism, Modernism and the Vanguards.Today, we are witnessing a reborn rhetoric especially in theoretical areas such as psychoanalysis, textual linguistics, cognitive linguistics, hermeneutics and modern literary theory, in particular in the theory of deconstruction.

  A modernidade iluminista e romântica abalou profundamente o legado multissecular da retórica, considerando-a um ensinamento antigo, pelo que a retórica foi sendo substituída pelo historicismo e pela filologia a partir do séc. XIX. Porém, a condenação generalizada da retórica conhece relevantes excepções, nomeadamente nas articulações procuradas pela poética romântica entre a retórica, a poesia e a filosofia.Gradualmente, a importância da retoricidade na linguagem e na linguagem literária alcançou crescente importância, com as poéticas do Simbolismo, do Modernismo e das Vanguardas. Assiste-se a uma retórica renascida sobretudo em domínios teoréticos como a psicanálise, a linguística textual, a linguística cognitiva, a hermenêutica e a teoria literária moderna, em particular com a teoria da desconstrução.
