  • China is by far the most dominant supplier of flake graphite and its main end-market refractory products. The country is changing the way and extent to which it produces graphite. Recent government action to temporarily close graphite processing plants for environmental reasons is the first direct action against the industry and points towards reform for its domestic graphite industry.

    India is the world's third largest flake graphite producer, but accounts for just 6% of global flake graphite output. While there are several small mines in India, questions remain over how much flake graphite is actually mined in the country versus product that is imported from China, reprocessed and then sold on for domestic use.

    Other common shaped refractory applications for natural graphite include alumina-magnesia-carbon bricks, which contain up to 15% high purity flake graphite, used most commonly for ladles in the steel industry, and alumina-carbon bricks, containing up to 11% high purity flake graphite, also used for steel ladles.
