This article analyzes the site and role of festival in Hispano-American society. In Iberia, these are related to the blending of the sacred and the profane in the popular culture tradition: in the New World, to the instruments of catechesis and indoctrination.

O presente artigo analisa o lugar e o papel da festa na Hispano-América. Assim como na metrópole, as festas do mundo colonial mesclaram sagrado e profano e exaltaram os poderes do Estado e da Igreja. No Novo Mundo, porém, elas, juntamente com o teatro religioso, tiveram um importante papel a cumprir como instrumento de doutrinação e evangelização das populações indígenas.
