The widespread acceptance of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) by most large computer manufacturers and procurement agencies means that many computer networks are now being installed that are based on a standard protocol defined by the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Although prior to the commissioning of the communication subsystem within a networked computer the protocols making up the subsystem are subjected to rigourous conformance tests, should a fault be suspected in an operational system it is also necessary to provide a facility to allow the operation of a system to be tested dynamically via the network. Such instruments are referred to as dynamic testers and they are particularly useful during the commissioning of a new network, for example, and also if a system connected to an operational network is suspected of being faulty.
