Immersive technology has existed for many years and in many guises, from stereoscopic viewers to head-mounted visual display units and shared experiences in immersive “caves”. In this article, Jon Leach and Martin Fowler of AECOM examine how immersive technology can be used as a powerful collaborative tool, discussing its application on a number of live projects, its benefits, its current limitations, and how it already has a place as a valid communication tool within existing engineering design workflows.
