In recent years, a shortage of development space in many cities has led to a rise in the construction of tall buildings.This article looks at the role special concrete mixes – highearly- strength concrete and self-compacting concrete– have to play in the design and construction of medium-rise and tall buildings. Using research case studies, the article considers the potential savings in construction costs off ered by the use of special concretes, as well as added value that may be realised through an increase in fl oor area.
