  • Resumen
    • Women have played an important role in fishing communities all over the developed world and they also play an important role in developing economies. Our analysis focuses on this role. The purpose of this article is to look at the role of women in the Spanish fish canning industry. To do so, our analysis focuses on Spain's primary fishing and canning region: the Ría de Vigo, a large estuary in Galicia (the north-western part of Spain). Our analysis is also limited to the historical period of its consolidation, in the late 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. The development of a new female labour force in the first decade of the 20th century is one of our most significant conclusions.
