  • The celebration of sporting successes in Classical Sparta has often been denied, but a fragment belonging to an epinician ode composed by Simonides for a Spartan victor and several agonistic epigrams of the same period demonstrate that Spartans did not refrain from advertising their victories in poetic forms.
