    There are many Works, by social anthropologists as well as political scientists, which have considered the significance and the impact of tradition in the political evolution of modern India. This article attempts, rather, to define the political culture of modern India in the manner in which a social anthropologist would approach any other type of belief, whether traditional or not in the society with which he is concerned, seeking to identify its specific pattern and the basic mechanisms which he will have to analyse.

    II existe déjà de nombreux travaux, aussi bien d'anthropologues que de politistes, qui ont tenté de pondérer la place et l'importance des facteurs traditionnels dans l'évolution politique de l'Inde contemporaine. On se propose plutôt ici de comprendre la culture politique de l'Inde d'aujourd'hui comme l'ethnologue le ferait de n'importe quel autre type de croyance, traditionnelle pu non, dans la société qu'il étudie, cherchant d'abord à cerner quelle en est la configuration spécifique et quels sont les ressorts fondamentaux dont il aura à entreprendre l'analyse.
