L’assemblage comme forme d’innovation. La fabrication d’un selfie-stick à Shenzhen

    This article relies on the case of the selfie-stick to investigate the process of design and fabrication in the manufacturing industry of the city of Shenzhen, China. Carefully documented, the permanent reconfiguration of this object around pre-existing technological blocks lead us to introduce the idea of assemblage as a central process of technological innovation. The geographical and digital trajectory of its production shows the instrumental and often minimized role of manufacturing tools and networks in the design of new products, and the need to take them into account to understand and regulate the production of technologies.

    Le présent article prend l’exemple du selfie stick pour examiner les processus de conception et de fabrication au sein de l’industrie manufacturière dans la ville de Shenzhen, en Chine. Documentée pas à pas, la recomposition permanente de cet objet autour de briques technologiques préexistantes nous amène à proposer l’assemblage comme un procédé central de l’innovation technologique. La trajectoire de sa production au sein d’un ensemble tant géographique que numérique montre également l’importance souvent minimisée des outils et réseaux de fabrication dans la conception de nouveaux produits, et la nécessité de les considérer pour comprendre et réguler la production de technologies.
