Safety first?: 'CIL' III, 128 et la rhétorique de la 'securitas'

    Securitas was a slogan propagated from the time of Augustus by literature and since the reign of Nero by the imperial coinage. In official and monumental inscriptions, it is found only from the time of Commodus onwards, particularly in a Latin inscription from Damascus’ region which was seen (and not well deciphered) by André de Monceaux, a traveller and agent of Colbert. In epitaphs, securitas was mentioned earlier, since it appeared at the latest under the Flavians, but it was not typical of the whole empire: instead, its use draws attention to the variety of epigraphic habits in space and time.

    Le slogan de la securitas a été diffusé par la littérature depuis l’époque d’Auguste et par le monnayage impérial depuis le règne de Néron. Dans les inscriptions officielles et monumentales, on ne le retrouve qu’à partir du règne de Commode, notamment dans une inscription latine des environs de Damas vue (et imparfaitement déchiffrée) par Monsieur André de Monceaux, un voyageur mandaté par Colbert. Dans les épitaphes, en revanche, l’invocation de la securitas est plus précoce, puisqu’elle apparaît au plus tard sous les Flaviens, mais elle n’est pas répandue dans tout l’empire, ce qui attire l’attention sur la variété des habitudes épigraphiques dans l’espace et dans le temps.
