    The crisis in the Mexican sense of a national identity at the end of the 20th century parallels that of the United States of America. The decline of the revolutionary Mexican ideology, the end of a mestizo state and the demand for cultural pluralism (as illustrated by the Chiapas rebels’ objectives) have a counterpart to the north of the border in the doubts that multiculturalism has aroused about the melting pot, claiming, as it does, to be better suited to the country’s diversity.

    La crise que traverse l’identité nationale du Mexique à la fin du xxe siècle est comparée à celle qui frappe les États-Unis d’Amérique à la même époque. Le déclin de l’idéologie révolutionnaire mexicaine, la fin d’un État métis et la revendication d’un pluralisme culturel illustrée par les objectifs des rebelles du Chiapas ont pour contrepoint nord-américain la mise en question du melting-pot au nom d’un multiculturalisme qui serait plus adapté à la diversité des États-Unis.
