  • Resumen
    • Between Venice and Rome: the ‘Good Samaritan’ by Marcantonio Bassetti conserved in Oxford.

A small canvas by Marcantonio Bassetti depicting the ‘Good Samaritan’ in the Christ Church Picture Gallery at Oxford, had previously not been assigned its proper place within the oeuvre of the Veronese painter. In the article, the work is seen to represent a fundamental node of intersection between the two foundational periods of the painter’s art: Venice (1605 – ca. 1614) and Rome (ca. 1615 – ca. 1620). The ‘Good Samaritan’ is probably the last work he carried out in Verona in 1614, before his move to the capital of the Papal States.

The painting offers the occasion for a reconsideration of the earliest period in Bassetti’s career marked by several lacunae that the author attempts to fill, throwing light on the fundamental shift that occurred around 1614 when the painter turned his back on Venice and embraced the new circumstances of post–Caravaggio Rome.
