  • Resumen
    • In the most common geographical works the indication of the obligatory places of passage used by peoples or armed groups as they move is generally vague or inexact. The authoress has made a summary study of these passageways-the so called "gates", the pylae of antiquity-which provides some clearer information. Among the places mentioned are the Khyber Pass, the Cicilian Gates and the Syriac Gates, the Dzungaric Gates, the Burgundian Gate, etc. Among the alpine passes on the watershed line, the most frequently used in past centuries for military expeditions was the Brenner Pass, and after it the Great St.Bernard.
