This is a brief review of the problems related to climatological data sets (quality, homogeneity, space-time resolution, coverage and accessibility) considered as basic data for the development of user-oriented products and services. Questions linked to the future of surface climatological networks are addressed from a European point of view. It outlines the need to marry conventional ground observations, remote sensed observations and numerical modelling to get the best possible climatological products and services. New methods for objective analysis that conserve the variability and the extreme values in the climatological fields need to be developed.
On s'intéresse,
