This paper explains how the analysis of ice cores extracted from polar icecaps (Antarctica, Greenland) and from glaciers allows scientists to reconstruct the variations of atmospheric temperature and chemical composition over the last 400,000. The contribution of this new scientific field has proved to be decisive in the understanding of Earth's climate and its evolution under the influence of natural and anthropic factors.
