  • Thrombocytopaenia (low platelet count) can be due to either a failure of platelet production or a shortened platelet lifespan. There are many causes for this and can be divided into immune and non-immune causes. Immune thrombocytopenia can be primary (ITP) or secondary. Patients with ITP are clinically heterogeneous and can vary from being asymptomatic to profound life-threatening bleeds. This article discusses the diagnosis, investigation and management of patients with ITP.
