  • The article announces that Phillippe de Montebello, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, will retire before the end of 2008. It is reported that the endowment of the Metropolitan Museum rose from $1.36 million to $2.9 billion under de Montebello's leadership. Several other highlights of de Montebello's career are noted including his acquisition of works by painter Paul Klee, of the Gelman Collection of modern paintings, and of the painting "Wheat Field with Cypresses," by Vincent Van Gogh.
