  • The article reports on the results of research conducted by Lawrence D. Rosenblum of the University of California, Riverside, which indicated that hybrid electric vehicles traveling at slow speeds are often inaudible to pedestrians, posing an increased traffic safety hazard, especially for the blind. Proposed generators of warning sounds, which would take the place of typical engine noises, are described. INSET: Sounding Out Sounds.
