This article discusses the resignation of the geneticist Francis S. Collins as the director of the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The development of the Human Genome project while Collins worked for the NHGRI is described. Collins will be replaced by Alan E. Guttmacher as the acting director of the NHGRI.
