This article discusses the ecological impact of wildfires relative to greenhouse gas emissions. An article by the ecologist Michael L. Goulden has found that the biomass level, and thus the amount of carbon dioxide stored, in California forests has declined since fire management intensified in the 1930s. The findings are discussed in terms of the practice of controlled burning used to thin forests. INSET: Going to Blazes.
