  • The article focuses on research which has found that a newly identified genetic mutation in the CALHM1 gene increases the risk for the most common form of Alzheimer's disease. The gene, which controls calcium concentrations in nerve cells, is the second major gene to be linked to the neurodegenerative disorder.
