The article discusses the different technologies of voting machines that are used in U.S. elections. While lever machines were once the norm in U.S. poling places, the author states that optical scanners and touch screens, called direct recording electronic (DRE) machines, have almost completely replaced the lever technology. Also examined is the importance of ballot design.
