  • The article focuses on the career and research of Harvard University professor Martin A. Nowak. The author discusses Nowak's experience with using computer models and mathematics to examine complex systems. Nowak's modeling of disease progression is examined, including his findings on how human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) develops into acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Also discussed is his research on the chemical kinetics of proteins.
