This article discusses research, published in the November 19, 2008 issue of "Energy & Fuels," into the use of electric fields to boost the fuel efficiency of an automobile. The electric fields reduce the viscosity of fuel, making it possible to use less of it in the operation of an internal combustion engine. This principle was also reported in the article "Elertrorheological Fluids" in the October 1993 issue of this magazine.
