This article reports on a new search for planets outside our solar system led by Michael Liu of the University of Hawaii, combining a new coronagraph (which masks out the host star), a high-sensitivity adaptive optics systems (which de-twinkles the light), and a spectral subtraction technique that wrings out stellar glare by focusing on emission from methane. The new search would show much more detail, including atmospheric composition and perhaps signs of life.
