  • Resumen
    • This article looks at the benefits of lower fertility rates in poor countries. The United Nations forecasts a rise in the world population to nine billion as of 2050. Those 2.5 billion additional people will arrive in the poor regions and aspire to the income and consumption levels of the rest of the world, which would lead to mindboggling environmental pressures. The author sees four steps to decreasing fertility, including the promotion of child survival, the promotion of girls' education and gender equality, the promotion of contraception and family planning, and an increase in farm productivity.
