This article looks at how much energy a Tour de France bicyclist expends during stage 14 of the race. A graph depicts the course and the energy expended through each phase. In the first 100 kilometers a cyclist will have made 17,000 pedal rotations to put out 4 million joules of energy. The heat dissipated is slightly more than that of a four slice toaster. By the time the cyclists reach the 145 kilometer point it is as if they have expended as much energy as if they had climbed Mount Everest.
