    Este estudio se pregunta por la relación que existió entre alcoholismo y el desarrollo del fútbol en Chile a fines del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX. Mediante la revisión de documentos de la época, discursos, manuales y prensa se analiza el contexto en que este fenómeno se llevó a cabo y las razones teóricas que impulsaron a los sectores dirigentes a suponer que este deporte podría acabar con la tensión existente entre un acelerado proceso de modernización económica y una población que, según su mirada, no estaba en condiciones de asumir este desafío, representando un grave riesgo al progreso de la nación.

    This article relates to the question of the relation between alcoholism and the development of football in Chile between the end of the XIX and the start of the XX Century. Through the check of period documents, speeches, manuals and the press, an analysis is carried out of the context through which this process is developed and the theoretical motives that impelled the elite to assume that this sport might be able to control the tension between an accelerated economical modernization process and a people that, through their own perspectives, wasn't able of handing this challenge, presenting a deep threat to the development of the nation
