    Pocas historias han alcanzado una fama comparable a la del rey Arturo y sus caballeros. La figura del mítico soberano de Britania –probablemente basada en un personaje real del siglo V– fue recuperada por los monarcas normandos de Inglaterra para legitimar sus aspiraciones políticas a ambos lados del Canal de la Mancha. Así, en el siglo XII, los primeros Plantagenet impulsaron la creación de obras literarias para difundir las maravillas de la corte de Camelot. Otros escritores retomarían más tarde estos relatos, añadiendo, progresivamente, elementos y personajes sin los cuales hoy seríamos incapaces de concebir la leyenda artúrica. Con el tiempo, quedó conformado un universo perfectamente pautado en el que se funden las tradiciones clásica, céltica y cristiana. Situado en un pasado ficticio plagado de anacronismos medievales, el mundo de Arturo quedó para siempre plasmado en la literatura y el arte.

    Few stories have reached a comparable fame to that of King Arthur and his knights.

    The figure of the mythical ruler of Britain –probably based on a historical character of the 5th century– was recovered by the Norman monarchs of England to legitimize their political aspirations on both sides of the English Channel. Thus, in the 12th century, the first Plantagenets fostered the creation of literary works to spread the wonders of the court of Camelot. Other writers would later resume these stories, gradually adding elements and characters without whom we would nowadays be unable to conceive the Arthurian legend. Over time, a perfectly organised universe was formed, in which Classical, Celtic and Christian traditions merge together. Set in a fictitious past full of medieval anachronisms, Arthur’s world was forever captured in literature and art.
