    THOUGHTS ON A FEW ABORTIVE ATTEMPTS AT INCREASED POWER, by JEAN-FRANÇOIS BAYART, FRANÇOISE BLANCHARD, SYLVAIN CAMARA, CHRISTIANE HURTIG A rapid analysis of four abortive attempts to gain increased power in the international system (India, Indonesia, Turkey and Zaïre) suggests that any effort to classify international actors by order of importance is essentially a question of representations and should not be dissociated from the surrounding political or economic dynamics. So many mistakes have been made in assessing the international development of certain States that predictions concerning the emergence of « new power centres » should be viewed with some caution.
