    Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901, showed an early interest in photography, invented at the end of the 1830s. Even though the sovereign and her husband supported the new medium, it is only in 1860s that photographs of the royal family were first disseminated. Meanwhile, parents and children lent themselves to the practice of the photographic portrait, as the albums entitled “Portraits of Royal Children”, whose 44 volumes cover the years 1848 to 1899, show. This paper focuses on family photographs and in particular on those depicting the queen and her children, until 1860. At stake is the issue of understanding how the passage from painted portraits to photographic portraits, which at this time are essentially intimate, led to a rupture in the representation of the sovereign as mother

    Victoria, reine du Royaume-Uni entre 1837 et 1901, a manifesté très tôt son intérêt pour la photographie, inventée à la fin des années 1830. Alors que la souveraine et son époux soutiennent ce médium naissant, ce n’est qu’en 1860 que les premières photographies de la famille royale sont diffusées publiquement. Entre-temps, parents et enfants se prêtent au jeu du portrait photographique, comme l’attestent les albums intitulés « Portraits of Royal Children », dont les 44 volumes parcourent les années 1848 à 1899 : cet article porte sur ces photographies de famille et plus particulièrement sur celles représentant la reine accompagnée de ses enfants jusqu’en 1860. L’un des enjeux est de comprendre comment le passage du portrait peint au portrait photographique, essentiellement intime à cette époque, a entraîné une rupture dans la représentation de la souveraine en tant que mère de famille
