  • Resumen
    • The Master of the Missal of Jean de Foix Identified : Liénard de Lachieze and Manuscript Illumination in Toulouse at the End of the 15th century.

Considered to be one of the most remarkable examples of manuscript illumination from Toulouse, the missal executed in 1492 for the Bishop of Comminges, Jean de Foix, marks the introduction of Renaissance forms in Toulouse. In the context of the exhibition, Manuscrits à Peinture en France 1440-1520, at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in 1993, François Avril presented a first body of manuscripts attributed to the principal illuminator of the missal. The rediscovery of a receipt attached to a conserved work of the Master of the Missal of Jean de Foix allowed us to identify him with an illuminator and copyist active in Toulouse between 1490 and 1501: Liénard de Lachieze. Based on partially unpublished archival documentation and on the stylistic analysis of a complete body of work, this article proposes to reconstitute the personality and the socio-artistic surroundings of this bistorieur, who was one of the greatest representatives of painting in Toulouse during the last quarter of the 15th century.
