Pertinencia y futuro de las revistas académicas

    El editor contemporáneo de revistas académicas vive su oficio desde un cruce de caminos, uno hecho de tiempo, de posibilidad y de recreación de los dilemas humanos que nos definen; algunos de ellos han caracterizado al antiguo, pero actual tema de la verdad y el origen del conocimiento (episteme). En la recreación de esos dilemas hay dos que quiero subrayar: el de la ética en la publicación y la objetividad del conocimiento. El primero lo considero fundamental para hablar del futuro de las revistas académicas –ya sean de investigación, científicas o de divulgación–, porque se relaciona con lo que hoy llamamos ética de la información. El segundo no es futuro sino un tema siempre presente, recorre nuestra historia, no pierde vigencia, por el contrario nos exige una continua indagación sobre el origen y validez del conocimiento. Una indagación no exclusiva para los investigadores sino también para quienes construyen las revista académicas.

    A modern-day editor of academic journals experiences his or her career from a kind of crossroads, made of time, possibility and the recreation of human dilemmas that define us; some of these dilemmas are intrinsically part of the ancient but currently relevant topic of truth and the origin of knowledge (episteme). There are two examples in the recreation of these dilemmasthat I want to highlight: the ethics of publication and the objectivity of knowledge. I consider the former fundamental in speaking of the future of academic journals—whether researchbased, scientific or popular in nature—because it is related withwhat we call the ethics of information. The latter is not a future, but always present topic, traversing our history, never invalid; on the contrary, it requires ongoing inquiry into the origin and validity of knowledge---an inquiry not only for researchers, but also for those who construct academic journals.
