  • Resumen
    • A director of the privately-owned Chilean iodine producer Cosayach has been sentenced to 61 days in prison after the company was found guilty of counterfeiting water rights in the areas of Cala Cala and Negreiros, Tarapaca, northwest of the coastal city of Iquique.

In September 2011, 20 illegal wells were shut down in Cala Cala by Chile's incumbent public works minister, Laurence Golborne (now the minister for mines), after the Direccion General de Aguas, Chile's national water board, presented the minister with the findings of an investigation into illegal water use in the region.

Cosayach is not expected to increase its iodine output this year as a result of its limited access to water. A new pipeline to transport seawater from Chile's coast to the company's production facilities is scheduled to be completed in August, but sources have said that they do not expect this target to be met.
