  • Resumen
    • The Ebola outbreak was confirmed in Sierra Leone in May 2014. The outbreak of the virus centred on the district of Kailahun in eastern Sierra Leone near the border with Guinea, approximately 300km from Sierra Rutile's operations located in the south west of the country.

News reports have been focusing on the situation in Sierra Leone and Liberia, with reports adding that "hundreds of soldiers" were being deployed to fight the Ebola virus, as the death toll climbed to 887 in August.

Sierra Leone and Guinea are large producers of bauxite and minerals sands. In 2012, Sierra Leone produced 22,590 tonnes ilmenite, 94,493 tonnes rutile, and 610 tonnes zircon. It also produced 776,000 tonnes bauxite. Meanwhile, Guinea produced 15.3m tonnes bauxite in 2011.
