Resumen de Compreender Tocqueville através da Revolução Francesa: a historiografia pela República

Alexis de Tocqueville, writing The Old Regime and the Revolution, tried to understand, in long term, the causes of the French Revolution of 1789. Consistent with his thought that the writing of history can illuminate the actions of the present, found that little by little the ideals for equality have been dominating the thinking of French at the same time that political freedom was being suppressed. The aim of this paper is to analyze this conception of Tocqueville’s history and how it permeates all his work to alert social formations against the dangers that may threaten the Republic and Democracy.

Alexis de Tocqueville, ao escrever O Antigo Regime e a Revolução, buscou entender, em longa duração, as causas da Revolução Francesa de 1789. Coerente com seu pensamento de que a escrita da História pode iluminar as ações no presente, verificou que pouco a pouco o ideário em prol da igualdade foi dominando o pensamento dos franceses ao mesmo tempo em que a liberdade política foi sendo suprimida. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar esta concepção da história de Tocqueville e como ela permeia todo o seu trabalho a fim de alertar as formações sociais contra os perigos que podem ameaçar a República e a Democracia.
