    This work analyses the different perspectives in the relationship of Jesuits, settlers and amerindians; by that we present some of the arrays of the ideas and the experiences that lead to the Bull of 1639 and also the reception of this document, which declared freedom without further conditions to all amerindians, in Rio de Janeiro. The opportunity to observe the changes in the contexts and in the relationships allow us to expose singularities in the perception of liberty defended to the amerindians presented to us by the Bull and how these particularities affected lives and wishes of the settlers in Rio de Janeiro.

    O artigo analisa diferentes condições na relação entre jesuítas, colonos e indígenas; apresentando matrizes de ideário e experiência que geraram o Breve de 1639, que declarava liberdade irrestrita dos indígenas, bem como sua recepção no Rio de Janeiro. A observação da mudança de contextos e de relações entre os agentes expõe a singularidade da percepção de liberdade indígena contida no Breve e como tal singularidade atingia anseios de colonos.
