Resumen de Graphite: : Year in Review 2014

Siobhan Lismore-Scott

  • 2014 has been a tumultuous year in graphite markets. While steel demand has edged up, this has not translated into volume or price growth for graphite. Meanwhile, the hype that has surrounded potential growth in the Li-ion battery sector has also failed to deliver short-term demand increases.

2014 has been a tumultuous year in graphite markets. While steel demand - a major driver for graphite consumption - has edged up over the year, this has not translated into volume or price growth for graphite. Meanwhile, the hype that has surrounded several announcements pointing to potential growth in the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery sector has also failed to deliver short-term demand increases.

The Chinese market is made up of many smaller graphite producers. However, last year the Chinese supply chain shifted as graphite mines were closed in both Heilongjiang, China's leading graphite producing region (producing around 29% of global supply in 2013), and Shangdong, after failing environmental inspections.
