Meanwhile, junior producer First Bauxite Corp. completed the assessment of its Bonasika bauxite project in Guyana and decided to develop a more flexible project with assets both in Guyana and the US, producing mullite for the refractory market and sintered bauxite for ceramic proppants used in the fracking industry.
Elsewhere, Imerys, the world's largest industrial mineral miner, purchased previously-producing bauxite mineral deposits in Brazil, planning to redevelop the operation to supply refractory grade bauxite.
Prices for refractory-grade bauxite were more stable and the differential between China and Guyana's products virtually disappeared, as rising labour and energy costs put pressure on refractory-grade bauxite producers in China.
