Resumen de Climate concerns drive Brazilian vermiculite growth

Adam Page, James Sean Dickson

  • Farmers had been slowly reducing the average percentage input of vermiculite to their soils -- now they are consuming it at former, higher levels, a spokesperson for Brazilian vermiculite producer Brasil Minerios told IM.

The use of vermiculite as an insulator in North America is well documented, and evidenced by its typical consumption grades. Large and medium grade vermiculite, which is commonly used in the region, is consumed less abundantly in Brazil, where the dominant use is still in agriculture, the Brasil Minerios spokesperson told IM.

IM has previously reported that the reclusive nation imports some of its vermiculite requirement from China. Having suffered numerous devastating famines in recent decades, it is possible that vermiculite is being used in the country to increase the agricultural productivity of North Korean soils.
