  • Resumen
    • The insurer advised shippers proposing to load, or that were in the "process of loading a cargo of bauxite in Kuantan or similar ports with prevailing or recent wet weather conditions, to contact [their] ship manager promptly to assess the requirement for appointing a suitable surveyor, and to treat these cargoes as potential Group A cargoes, i.e., cargoes which may liquefy if shipped at a moisture content in excess of their transportable moisture limit (TML)".

Group A - cargoes that may liquefy if shipped at a moisture content exceeding their TML. Many mineral cargoes will appear suitable to transport, even when they are wet, but this does not mean they are safe for carriage as visual appearance can be deceptive, according to insurance company Skuld. Group A cargoes may not always liquefy if the voyage is calm and the ship's movement does not result in any significant energy transfer to the cargo.

"Contamination is a problem when carrying soda ash," P&I providers, the Standard Club, has noted. "The ship should not have carried chrome or chrome products, such as ferrochrome, chrome ore, bagged chrome and chrome manganese within the past six months to a year," it added.
