"In comparison, a mine at Duntanlich, boasting a resource in excess of 7.5m tonnes of barite, will supply the whole of the UK's requirements for more than 50 years at planned production rates," it added.
The company spokesperson told IM : "The UK demand for barite is fulfilled approximately a third from domestic sources and the rest imported, mainly from Morocco. However, increases in world demand have put pressure on sources of barite in Morocco, India and China." The UK Minerals Forum commented: "Internationally the UK is facing increasing global competition for raw materials. The UK is not self-sufficient in a number of key sectors, particularly metals and increasingly energy - oil, gas and coal."
